Thanks to our member companies, university partners and community participants, NYC Media Lab had a fantastic 2018. We awarded over $1 million to faculty and students across the City; produced and facilitated over 50 prototype projects and university startups; and exhibited 200+ emerging media and technology demonstrations to the public at 6 conferences and public events.

Development continues at RLab. RLab is the first city-funded VR/AR centerin the country. Fueled by a $5.6 million investment by NYCEDC and MOME, RLab will support startups, talent development, research and innovation. When complete in 2019, RLab will house 16,500 square feet of co-working space, labs, classrooms, studios, and more.

The Verizon EdTech Challenge will award $1M to nonprofit and university teams. In 2018, NYC Media Lab launched the Verizon 5G EdTech Challenge in partnership with Verizon Innovative Learning and Verizon 5G Labs to find cutting-edge technologies that will transform middle school education. The 10 winning teams, each to receive a $100,000 grant, will be announced in early 2019.
NYC Media Lab was awarded the Journalism 360 Award from The Knight Foundation, Google News Initiative and Online News Association. In 2018 NYC Media Lab was one of 11 teams awarded a $20,000 Journalism 360 Award. Working with the Associated Press, NYC Media Lab will produce a Visualizing Health and Science News in AR applied R&D project.
Tech:NYC lists NYC Media Lab's entrepreneurship programs in its roundup of NYC Accelerators and Incubators to Watch in 2019. With multiple accelerator programs running at NYC Media Lab and RLab, 2019 will be a year for pushing forward emerging media and technology startups from the City's universities and broader innovation ecosystem. The Tech, Media & Democracy program returns in 2019 to campuses across NYC. Cornell Tech, Columbia University, City University of New York, New York University, and The New School are collaborating on a unique pan-university course that aims to defend independent journalism and explore the relationship between social media and democracy.
Save the Date: NYC Media Lab's Annual Summit will be hosted at CUNY City Tech's new state of the art facility in Downtown Brooklyn on Thursday, September 26th. The Lab's flagship event will host a full day or panels, lighting talks, startup pitches, 100 demos, workshops. We're excited to bring the event to Brooklyn, and at CUNY, for the first time in 2019.
