AI, machine learning, computer vision and future interfaces – data continues to change the way media is produced, distributed, consumed and monetized. NYC Media Lab’s Machines + Media conference, generously sponsored and hosted by Bloomberg for a second year, will focus on new applications of data science and technology in media and journalism. This year’s program will give special consideration to topics such as fake news and disinformation, changing business models, and the impact of automation on the media. Speakers and presenters from across New York City’s industry, innovation and university communities will convene to explore new trends and best practices.

The rapid growth of social media platforms has changed the way humanity interacts with news and information and with one another, redefining the very nature of the public sphere. In the future, technologies such as artificial intelligence and deep learning will change the media perhaps even more profoundly. Lawmakers around the globe are now contending with questions about what to do to maintain a healthy, democratic discourse. Led by Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait, this keynote discussion will survey the major questions and probe for possible solutions.

Fake news, synthetic video and voices that mimic real people are attacking our shared objective reality. Traditional gatekeepers were once able to construct a set of small conversations, but open platforms now allow many voices to participate and shape a conversation, including some with malicious and often secret agendas. This panel will discuss the biggest threats to the discovery of truth, how disinformation is created and promulgated, and potential ways to fight back together.
