Measurement and Analysis of Adaptive Streaming Over HTTP

A collaboration from Verizon and NYU Tandon

 

This project was a study on the measurement and analysis of adaptive streaming over HTTP. Researchers at NYU Tandon, working with experimental data from adaptive streaming systems like Netflix and Redbox Instant, measured their performance in typical user networking environments, such as residential access networks and campus networks. The team measured performance in the initial buffering delay, video rate initialization and adaptation, playback freezes, and recovery. The team also tested the measured systems under a wide range of emulated network environments to see how they react to network condition changes, and how user quality is affected by such changes. This research resulted in better understanding of performance and problems of existing adaptive streaming solutions, and the basis of designs for new adaptive streaming solutions.
